Man found dead in Lake Bemidji State Park cabin

BEMIDJI — A man was found dead in a Lake Bemidji State Park rental cabin on Tuesday, July 26.

According to a release from Beltrami County Chief Deputy Jarrett Walton, at approximately 1:30 p.m. on July 26, deputies responded to a medical call at a rental cabin in Lake Bemidji State Park.

Upon arrival, deputies found Matthew Skarperud, 48, originally of Grand Forks, N.D., dead inside an enclosed porch, the release said. There were no obvious signs of trauma or suspicious circumstances.

Skarperud was transported to the Midwest Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy, with results pending.

Over the weekend, Birchmont Golf Tournament men's championship runner-up Adam Van Raden competed with a red ribbon on his hat in honor of Skarperud, who was a regular participant in the annual tournament.

"He will be missed dearly," Skarperud's obituary reads, "but there is comfort in knowing he spent his final days in a place he loved with family and close friends participating in the annual Birchmont Golf Tournament."
