Thief River Falls dropped a 3-0 decision at Bemidji on opening night, before bouncing back with an 8-1 win at Detroit Lakes Friday night to start the season with a 1-1 record.

The Prowlers outshot the Lumberjacks in two of the three periods in the opener – 11-6 in the first and 9-5 in the second – and they were an even 8-8 in the other. Unfortunately, none of the shots made it past Bemidji goaltender Nettie Kimble, who saved all 28 shots she faced in the 3-0 shutout win.

“We didn’t take care of the puck very well,” said Thief River Falls Coach Brett Johnson. “A lot of panicking with the puck. We didn’t make a lot of positive plays with the puck in the offensive zone and didn’t use our teammates very well. We played in the offensive zone for extended periods of time but got a lot of shots from the perimeter and their goalie controlled her rebounds very well, not giving us very many second chances.”

Bemidji took a 1-0 lead on a Gracie Fisher goal at 10:43 of the first period. The Lumberjacks added goals by Olivia Johnson and Ariyah Thomas in the second period to make it 3-0.

Friday night, Thief River Falls got its offense going with a 48-shot effort that led to an 8-1 win over Detroit Lakes.

“Much better team game,” Johnson said. “We moved the puck very well and found ourselves supporting the puck and our teammates much better.”

The Prowlers netted four first period goals off the sticks of Khloe Lund, Bella Amiot, Bela Nelson and Lexi Huot. Lund scored her second goal of the game 2:59 into the second period to make it 5-0 in favor of the Prowlers.

Detroit Lakes got on the board less than a minute later, with a goal by Emma Coley at the 3:45 mark. It took the Prowlers less than 30 seconds to go back up by five goals, as Nelson scored for the second time at the 4:14 mark. Kia McGlynn and Huot scored third period goals to round out the scoring for the Prowlers. Picking up assists for the Prowlers were Lund (2), Huot, Haylie Rogalla (2), McGlynn, Amiot (2) and Shelby Breiland.
